The Black Tulip

Not everyone could do it. In fact, almost no one else that I could think of, could construct a story about a gardener whose main passion in life is to grow a new variety of tulip, and turn it into a compelling, intrigue-filled, heroic romance. But Dumas does, here.

Certainly, Dumas shines in his more famous novels, like The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, giants of hundreds and hundreds of pages (thousands if you consider the entire Musketeer cycle), replete with swashbuckling, conspiracy, murder and ladies-fair. It is therefore understandable that some of his audience might be put off by The Black Tulip, which is a scant 197 pages, and has its hero in jail for most of the novel, struggling to grow a flower by proxy.

But really, the lesson is how great Alexandre Dumas is, because The Black Tulip manages to be just as rewarding (and at times, as thrilling) as his more renowned epics. Also, Dumas here shows some of his versatility and his incredible understanding of humanity, in the lovers conversations between Cornelius and Rosa, and in his rye, good-natured and subtle observations that, really, concentrating on tulip-growing, as opposed to warfare or violence, is a sign of greatness, not of mediocrity.

You can't come to The Black Tulip looking for precisely the same things you'd seek in Dumas' other winners, but if you're looking for a wonderful little story, almost perfectly told, you're in the right place. With this tale, Dumas takes his place as my favourite author, of all time.

The Three Musketeers is the first of three books about the adventures of Athos, Porthos, Aramis and d'Artagnan. This is the portion of the story which is most often adapted for film and stage--the fateful meeting of this quartet of friends, and their first adventures together as young d'Artagnan proves himself to be Musketeer material.

This book occurs during the reign of Louis XIII, when Cardinal Richelieu wields power equal to the King's. (Some versions of The Three Musketeers split the book into two parts, giving the title The Four Musketeers to those sections occurring after d'Artagnan's commission.)

The first sequel to The Three Musketeers is Twenty Years After. Richilieu's successor, Cardinal Mazarin, wields power as Louis XIV's regent, and the Musketeers must help the young king gain his birthright.

The second sequel is a very long novel titled The Vicomte de Bragelonne. Because its unwieldy size made it difficult to sell, this book is commonly divided into three pieces, each of which is a novel by itself in size: Ten Years Later, Louise de la Valliere, and The Man in the Iron Mask. (Ten Years Later is sometimes used as an alternative title for the entire "Vicomte.") The last part is the most easily found of the three, but it can a very confusing read without the groundwork of the earlier sections. For this reason, many editions of "Iron Mask" include the later parts of "Louise."

My understanding of the first two parts is this: Raoul, the Vicomte of the title, and the son of Athos, becomes engaged to Louise de la Valliere, but their relationship is ended when Louis XIV begins to court her aggressively. Meanwhile, Aramis (now a Jesuit priest) has a plot afoot, and eventually d'Artagnan begins to suspect something. "Iron Mask" is the story of the fruition of Aramis's grand plot, the last deeds of Raoul, and the final fate of the four old friends.

Brief Biography

Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870)

Alexandre Dumas is one of the greatest writers of his time. Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24, 1802 , in Villers-Cotterêts , France . Few people know that Alexandre was a grandson of a Haitian slave who was also the illegitimate son of Marie Louise-Elizabeth Labouret and Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, a general in Napoleon's army. His father died when Alexandre was four, in 1806, leaving the family in financial trouble. Although he did not have much money and had limited schooling, Alexandre had a happy childhood.

In 1818, Alexandre's mother informed him that they had no money and that he had to find a job. Alexandre accepted a clerking position for the Duke of Orléans in Paris , where he worked as a clerk. After he met a famous French actor, Talma, and decided to become a play writer. Alexandre wrote his first play, Napoléon Bonapart, in 1825. His most popular novels are the musketeers trilogy, which includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Another well-known novels were The Count of Monte Cristo, Ten Years Late, and The Black Tulip.

Alexandre fathered two illegitimate children of two different mothers. His son, Alexandre Dumas Junior was born on July 27, 1824 and his daughter, Marie Dumas, was born on March 5, 1831 . On February 1, 1840 , Alexandre married a woman whom he divorced six years later. By 1843 Alexandre wrote fifteen plays. Historical novels brought him an enormous fortune, but he spent money faster than he earned it. Download the easiest screen capture (print screen) program. Alexandre returned to Paris in 1862. After Alexandre became ill, he was taken to his son's house in Puys , France , where he died of a stroke on December 5, 1870 . Two years later, his remains were transported to the place of his birth, Villers-Cotterêts.

All generalizations are dangerous, even this one.

Rogues are preferable to imbeciles because they sometimes take a rest.
